The Scoop On Buffalo Ice Cream

by Colleen Colkitt

Summer weather is finally here to stay (*knock on wood*), which means it’s time for patios, summer cocktails, and – you guessed it – ICE CREAM! All our favorite spots have officially reopened for the season, so we put together a list of local ice cream places to make it easier the next time your sweet tooth flares up.

Here are 10 ice cream joints to check out in Buffalo:

Fran-Ceil Custard

Looking for ice cream with a history? Fran-Ceil Custard has been around since the 1950s, serving cold scoops to people of Blasdell, Lackawanna and Hamburg. Frozen custard is their specialty but they also have Perry’s hard scoop ice cream if that’s what you’re into. They have all your favorite flavors like vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. The flavors rotate, so you might get to order their specials like pistachio, cotton candy or tangerine.

Antoinette’s Sweets

5981 Transit Road

Depew, NY 14043

Have a heavy ice cream craving? Antoinette’s Sweets has homemade ice cream that you won’t want to pass up. All of their ice cream is made in-house, every day - so are their toppings and syrups. You’ll notice the rich and creamy taste of homemade right away. If you haven’t been in yet, make it a point to visit their location in Depew!

Anderson’s

Sheridan Drive; Union Road; Main Street: Delaware Ave; Transit Road; West Amherst

If you’re from Buffalo, you probably grew up on Anderson’s and remember it as the go-to place you visited after big events or on special occasions. With their six locations, it can be easy to forget that they’re a locally-owned business. Stop in for lunch or dinner and try their roast beef, chicken fingers, soups and salads. Stick around for dessert and get soft serve or pick your favorite hard scoop flavor. They even have frozen yogurt and delicious shaved ice!

Hanna’s Frosty Treats

140 Taunton Place

Buffalo, NY 14216

Ice cream, cones, sundaes, dips, smoothies, slushies and more. You’ll find exactly what you’re looking for at Hanna’s. This little ice cream stand is packed with huge hits on their menu. We think the best part is their pet-friendly atmosphere – you can even get a cone for your pup if you bring him or her, but be sure to bring cash!

Churn

1501 Hertel Ave

Buffalo, NY 14216

Expect wacky, inventive and knock-your-socks-off ice cream concoctions here. The menu looks so good it might make you dizzy! Some of their ice cream creations come with tiny macaroons on top or topped with Trix cereal. We think The Billionaire will strike everyone’s fancy: it has twist soft serve, chocolate dip, hazelnuts, Nutella, wafer and golden pearls. Who wouldn’t love that?!

If you haven’t been here yet, make it a point to stop in some time this summer because their made-from-scratch small batch artisan ice cream is to die for. They have unique creations like the Wee Bit of Scotland sundae, which has Whiskey Brown Sugar ice cream layered with toasted oats and fresh raspberry sauce, topped with whipped cream and a Lou Lou Bakes shortbread wedge. Other ice cream flavors include all your favorite Buffalo things: Icewine Sherbet (yeah, we said icewine), Paula’s Glazed Donut, Loganberry and more.

Parkside Candy

208 Main St

Buffalo, NY 14214

&

1949 Colvin Blvd

Tonawanda, NY 14150

Here you can enjoy quality chocolates, hard ice cream, sundaes with homemade whipped cream and sponge candy. They even have light sandwiches available at the Main Street location. Their classic decor and nostalgic atmosphere will transport you to simpler times. This is a perfect place to go for gift shopping. You can pick up a special treat for a loved one and you can grab ice cream or another dessert for yourself! It’s a win-win.

One of Lockport’s favorite ice cream shops is Reid’s. The outdoor patio is a perfect place to enjoy your chilled dessert after a long summer day. Choose from over 24 old-fashioned milkshake flavors, in addition to soft serve, hard ice cream, smoothies, floats and sundaes. You can even take home 6 packs of their ice cream sandwiches to devour later!

Die-hard ice cream fans rave about De Dee’s Dairy, an old-school ice cream shop in Niagara Falls. Known for their generous portion sizes, it’s no wonder why this place is so popular! There’s an endless list of ice cream flavors, which makes it hard to choose just one flavor, and they have waffle cones, banana splits, milkshakes and so much more.

Nick Charlap’s Ice Cream

Hamburg; Boston; West Seneca; Angola

This WNY ice cream shop has been family owned for more than 50 years. The tastes are unreal, probably because they have real whipped cream and so many homemade recipes. Expect flavors like Bourbon Praline Pecan and Cashew Caramel Crunch, and don’t forget they make their own fudge!
