11, yes 11, places to get your sponge candy fix

One of Buffalo’s most popular sweet treats, sponge candy is virtually unknown to people who live outside of the Western New York area. Maybe it’s our chilly, relatively dry climate that makes the city the perfect place to cook up this confection (so many of us have felt that twinge of despair after biting into a not-so-crunchy piece of sponge candy that was out too long in the heat or damp air) or maybe it’s the peculiarity of the candy that makes it nearly exclusive to the area that has come to love it so much. It can difficult texture to describe to out-of-towners – a layer of chocolate over something crunchy. Like a malted milk ball, but not.

Either way, the change from summer to fall means that Buffalo is entering into sponge candy season, and we, here at Buffalo Dinner Club, want to help you prepare for that most wonderful time of the year with a list – in no particular order – of 11 chocolate shops where you can get your sponge candy fix.
